While the
Team Suzuki rider has no current plans to retire from Australian Superbike
racing, 40-year-old Giles acknowledges that he will have to hang up his race
boots one day, and is scouting for new challenges to meet his need for speed.
Three-time
Australian Superbike Champion, Giles was surprised by the power and braking
ability of the #1 Rain City Racing Boss Mustang of two-time series champion
Gavin Bullas.
Piquing his
interest in the cars and the series, Giles left the session with hopes of one
day getting behind the wheel to test the Mustang first hand to investigate
further.
The Touring
Car Masters presented by Autobarn is in action at Eastern Creek Raceway for
round four, this Father’s Day weekend, as the headline act in Australia’s
largest annual muscle car event, Muscle Car Masters.
Giles will
be back aboard his Team Suzuki GSX-R1000 Superbike next weekend in the ASBK
series’ penultimate round at the L&H 500 at Phillip Island Grand Prix
Circuit.
SHAWN GILES:
“While I’m
still keeping up with the young blokes, I’m not planning to give up racing in
the ASBK with Team Suzuki.
“Unfortunately,
I know the day will come when I have to step aside, and I don’t think I could
handle not having some kind of speed fix.
“I’m
looking ahead a bit and sussing out where I can get my racing buzz.
“I
like the old cars, so the Touring Car Masters appeals. It was good to get a
taste of it today. Now, I’d really like to get behind the wheel.
“It’s been
a long time since I’ve been in a race car. We were hanging it out a bit on the
straight; we were right out on the dirt. I was pretty impressed with the brakes
and there were a couple of moments coming up behind other cars that I was sure
he wasn’t going to pull it up in time and I thought I’d better hang on.
“It was an
awesome experience and something to think about, but for now I need keep my
focus on the Superbikes for the L&H 500 at Phillip Island, next weekend.”
