I SO agree with Arthur!!
There is no comparison, the US builds better cars.
While we have made some AWSUM cars here in oz,you cant compare them to the likes of the Mustang,Charger,Camaro,Challenger,Cuda....THOSE are REAL muscle cars!
& Terry,RITE ON!! :) Mustangs r DEFINATLY the BEST cars ever!!!

I think American's build better muscle cars that's not belittling Aussies.

A muscle car should make you feel alive like no other thing. They usually achieve this by giving you countless near death experiences and a renew appreciation for life.

In a muscle car, whenever you touch the steering wheel of press a pedal this may be the last time you ever do so.

I was once saw a guy in Hawaii hire a Dodge Viper and this thing just sounded like nothing else from this world. ("The grim reaper" actually came to mind). Now The Viper is a true modern AMERICAN muscle car.

You just don't get those frightening suicidal thought running through your head when you drive a high performance Aussie car. That's because they corner, brake or accelerate and you know you can even tow a caravan if you feel like. Aussies are just more practical.

You Guys have totally missed the point. The original muscle car was the pontiac GTO. It was built using a mid sized car, the Le Mans, it had its 326ci donk replaced with the 389ci V8 from the full size range of Pontiacs. Add some heavy duty brakes and suspension and you have a muscle car. Comparing this icon to a 6 cylinder Torana and calling it a muscle car is ridiculous in my opinion. Even Aussie V8 cars don't deserve the title, none of them has a factory big block, and I would say no small block car Oz or US would qualify. Rangi,NZ

Don't great Muscle cars have to go round corners? Isn't that why they have never come to Bathurst? Or are we just interested in Drag racing?

I dont understand how we here in Australia can really think that our cars compare with what the AMERICANS built lets take 1970 .In 1970 the BOSS 429 MUSTANG around now how can anybody , even a one eyed aussie enthusiest really compare a ford gt to the MUSTANG look at the lines ,2 door etc
the falcon was built to be a taxi and a good one at that but a MUSCLE CAR please .
What about 440 six pack ROADRUNNERS/SUPERBEES,HEMI POWERED CUDAS & CHALLENGERS,BIGBLOCK CAMAROS,CHEVELLS ETC we were driving cars like cortinas, falcons& kingswoods when they were driving CORVETTES, MUSTANGS,CAMAROS
CHARGERS
Yes are cars are nice but the real muscle cars for me are AMERICAN ( THATS ONLY TALKING MID 60S TO EARLY 70S ).ARTHUR Laliotis

In 1972, Australia was about to unleash the V8 LJ XU-1,the XA GTHO Phase 4,the R/T E55 340 V8,4 Speed Charger, then the 1972 Supercar Scare Hit and killed off our Aussie Supercars and put us Backwards untill the year 2000 when the HSV GTS came on the scene with its 300KW V8,So if the 1972 Supercar Scare hadent of happened, and Holden,Ford, and Crysler kept on Building Supercars from 1972 to 2010 just think of what awesome supercars we would have now,The Yanks would be buying them from our shores,in one way Mad Max open some eyes up to American Muscle Car Fans with Max's Black XB Interceptor Coupe, but only if they new about the Phase 4 falcon and the V8 LJ XU-1 Holden Torana.

Australians always seemed to build more "balanced" Muscle Cars as we used them for circuit racing. Yet so did the Americans, the Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am, Camaro Z/28, Mustang Boss 302, Challenger T/A and 'Cuda AAR were all homologation models for Trans-Am circuit racing. We only ever got Muscle in one flavour, the Americans had Muscle for everyone. From cheap, stripped out, low-buck bangers like the basic '68 Plymouth Roadrunner to stuff like a fully optioned out Mercury Maruader Luxury car and in all sizes from "Compact" (eg: Dodge Dart GTS), to "Intermediate" (eg: Chevrolet Chevelle SS396), to "Full Size" (eg: Ford Galaxie 7-Litre) and don't forget the "Pony Car" (eg: Ford Mustang GT).
The Americans made the best muscle cars by far, their engine development programs were bar none (especially Chevrolet's). Us Aussies had some stand out cars too but overall, the yanks win.
Who builds the best Muscle Car today though? My opinion...Mercedes-Benz. The current C63 AMG is everything a good muscle car should be. Don't believe me? Just drive one, turn the T/C off and make sure your life insurance is up to date. R. Willox

The USA may have a lot more muscle cars but in my opinion that makes AUS muscle much more desirable. GT Falcons XU1s E38 & E49 Chargers GTS Monaros & some Commodores are all as good as anything the "Yanks" ever built.

Aussie muscle wins in my opinion because the cars were not tanks like many (but not all) of the Americans. What the Americans labeled as intermediate or small cars in the muscle era were darn huge by Aussie standards. Along with all the metal, power to weight ratio (and handling) was often way below the pinnacle e.g. compare acceleration and quarter mile times of an E49 and a 426 Hemi Charger of the era. However, they certainly had the coolest engines like 426 Hemis, big block Chevys and Fords, Ramcharger Wedges etc., etc. Oh what might have been for Aussie muscle if it hadn't been for the early 70's oil embargo and vote catching missions by our wonderful politicians. I grew up in this era, loved it passionately and have owned a 4 BBL Pacer, E49 Charger, XB Falcon GT and a HT 350 Monaro. I presently have a 1970 454 big block Corvette. Keep restoring em and long live both. Love em all.

In my humble opinion, judging by looks alone...the yanks win it hands down...no contest!
I'll admit I've never driven either type but which one would I want to put to the test? did I hear you ask? The American variety and only the American variety, with the exception of the GT Shaker. It's a worthy candidate and worthy oponent. Loud and proud, and in your face all the way...that's the American 'show pony' way...isn't it? They're poser machines as much as muscle cars!

As a previous owner of a 2000 HSV Clubsport R8 and now a 1996 Chev Camaro Z28 convertible (I like the wind in my hair), I think there is pro's and cons for both. Ok, a convertible is hard to judge against a hardtop, there is scuttle shake (even if minor), a bit of body twist, but overall I love/d them both. As for performance, the Camaro is quicker off the line and you get a nice kick to the side when it changes, just due to the drive train set up, yet the HSV was better (and easier to control) at higher speeds. I have also driven Monaro's and Mustang's - which both I liked. The USA has more to choose from in muscle cars, but we definitly hold our own when it comes to high performance cars - in fact our quality of build and the overall ride I would say is better for the Aus cars. What ever it is, as long as it has a Chev motor in it, it will be good ! - Grrrrummm-b-b-b .... Geoff Alderson, Vic.

Basically comes down to this. USA have a better range of manufacturers. Of all our muscle cars we have two manufacturers. USA have Ford and GM the same as us, but they also have Dodge, Pontiac, Plymouth etc. Also worth mentioning they have arguably the best and most desirable model upgrades through the legend that is Carroll Shelby. The Ford Mustang is the greatest muscle car of all time, the cars are loved by young and old alike. Just look at the movies they have featured in, the 1968 fastback in bullet, the 67 Elenor in gone in 60 seconds and the 06 model in Death race just to name 3. You only have to go to any car show in Australia to see the popularity of the Mustang.Don't forget the successes Mustangs have had in Australin racing history. Terry Smith
