12 Jan 2010 | This one should be interesting... Holden. No marque in Australia has the strength of brand credibility, history, market share and potential for lively debate From the humble 48/215 (which started a revolution and gave the average Aussie a tough and useable six-seater), to the performance of the XU-1 andW427 to the comfort of the WB Caprice. Australia has been responsible for many innovations in the automobile industry, such as the invention of the ute; and the production of some of the fastest cars ever made. Examples include the Ford GTHO and several HSVs. Joe Zanotti

LJ GTR Torana. Great looks and compact. Will fit in my garrage nicely. One day I will get one?
Any news of a Dynacorn replica? Might make a nice story for your next mag?

The LJ XU-1,as it Beat the Fastest 4-Door car in the World,The XY GTHO Phase 3 Ford Falcon at the 1972 Bathurst 500 Race, and Peter Perfect dident even need the V8 Version of the LJ XU-1 to Beat the Phase 3 ,And if Brocky did have that 271 HP V8 LJ XU-1 on the grid of the 1972 Bathurst 500 Race,it might of been like the 1979 Bathurst Win.
Colin Bond Efforts with the LJ XU-1 in rallying as well, made it a awesome all round Muscle Car.
With 72 Bathurst 500 Win under its Belt plus its Rallying Wins,it has to be the Greatest Holden.

I believe the HK GTS 327 Monaro is the best car Holden have build as this was the beginning of the Muscle Cars era for Holden. The achievements along with great shape and stipes of this car will always ensure that the car will be a legend within Australia for generations to come. What a beautiful car!

Out of the 60+ cars I've owned I've had a few Holdens over the years LJ XU-1, HG and HZ utes, HQ & HZ Kingys, HQ Prem, HJ & HX Statemans, HJ GTS, UC, VT SS and VX Calais. And one thing they've all had in common was the fact that I couldn't help but notice is that they were all engineered by accountants, that is to say that potential good designs were let down by cheapskate engineering.
Anthor thing most of 'em had in common was all but the utes had leaking boots!
And the XU-1 was an awful road car the only thing it had going for it was a good power to weight ratio, I much preferred the Chargers and HO's I had even so, they too had their limitations as road cars.

Crikey! Everyone's forgotten family here! In the '60s-'70s our best kid mover was the EJ wagon (same factory pale blue/white roof as Gran's, but hers was in better nick!) My favourite ute is the HG (getting one restored now...308, can't wait!)

How about the camira, what a great boat anchor!!
It came with factory built sqeaks and rattles.
Funny fact they called it the J CAR probably because
thay were high when they designed it.My vote would
go to the HQ 350 GTS monaro good shape plenty of room
and a fair amount of grunt

I think the vk group a,with the hdt fitted crane cam
and bilistein suspension is pretty hard to beat plus
it was also one of brocks favourites. On another subject someone commented on the XU1 being the toughest 6,correct me if i'm but the RT charger was alot tougher! About 150bhp to be more precise!!!

The HK 327 GTS Monaro was the best as that is the car that got holdens racing history on track. Plus I owned a 186S model which I bought new in 1969.

As a fan of English & European cars and not a great fan of the Auzzie car I believe the best Holden was the Torana XU-1 a great looking and performing small car with a lot of appeal.

I agree with other comment from Glenn. HG350 Monaro is the greatest although A9X isn't far behind!

Coming from a Ford man this is difficult, however the only Holdens that would make me cross over to the dark side would be HQ GTS350 or A9X Hatch, Andy.

This is just about impossible but, if forced to name just one Holden as my all time favourite, it has to be the HG350 Monaro. The last of the classic shape Monaros and a car absolutely venerated in the pages of "Wheels" and "Sports Car World" back in the '70s. Fantastic looks, great performance and handling and that awesome sound from the factory four branch exhaust! A true classic.

HQ Monaro GTS 2 or 4 door I owned a 4 door from 74 to 80 & loved it. The 2 Door HQ GTS was the best looking car ever designed in Australia.

VZ GTO. The last of the classic Aussie designed CV8s, and the ONLY one to be powered by the mighty 6 Litre LS2 engine.

The HQ LS Monaro. I had a VH Charger XL and my mate had the Monaro and I was envious. Good shape, nice interior for 1972, still hard to beat.

It's very hard to go past the XU-1's. A classic shape, a very quick inline six and fantastic racing history. No wonder prices are so high for them now!
